After living in Taiwan for almost two years I went back to an Atlanta that had changed in predictable ways. Some like you describe, other new stuff had sprung up.
The weird thing was I came back and Sanxia, my little "first home" here in Taiwan, had finally finished construction on the new downtown during the spring while I was gone and was a different world. My street was unmaneuverable on scooterback due to people.
So I've been here almost another year since then. I don't know what to think. You're right, you can never go back -- anywhere.
