Heavy weather Friday night. An unseasonal storm system formed up over Indiana over the day (the remnants of the one that was doing an Oprah-style tornado distribution in Iowa the day before) and started spawning cells and supercells around the Ohio River. Usually, this crap burns itself out before it gets to us, but we got hammered multiple times between about 3:30pm and midnight. Lexington saw 70mph straight-line winds, small hail, and lightning strikes beyond number.

I spent most of the day in the EOC - my boss and most of the department's command structure were out of town, so I was trying to monitor our radio, LFD's radio, radar, and traffic cameras simultaneously to maintain situational awareness. The traffic cams went offline after the first big blow-up, so that reduced my workload slightly. Campus took surprisingly little damage. We lost a chunk of roof on the College of Ag's conference center and some tree limbs were down on roads, but when I left around 10:30 that night, that was all the significant damage. Power was out across town from wires down and transformer fires - I think LG&E/KU's status map was showing 70,000 customers without power in Fayette County at one point.

Across Kentucky and southern Indiana, NWS confirmed three tornado touchdowns and hail as large as 4" in diameter. Shenanigans.

I was thinking about biking to work tomorrow but I suspect there's still gonna be tree parts all over the bike lanes. Pass.
