After much deliberation,
elalyr and I bought a dining room table and chairs yesterday. Sinking that much money on furniture felt unnatural, but perhaps this is one of those grown-up homeowner things. I've certainly spent more on some rifles than the price of the table alone, and I'm fairly certain I'll wind up getting more use out of the table, so this expenditure may not be all that unnatural when viewed in the proper perspective. Delivery will be next Saturday. We're in the process of clearing the last of my home-office setup out of the dining room in preparation.
Other renovations are proceeding slowly. The basement still looks like an explosion in an Ikea distribution center. E should finish the painting on the bookshelves today, after which it'll be on me to measure and drill a bunch of pilot holes in preparation for attaching them to the walls and each other. Once that's done, we can shift about seven bookshelves worth of material onto the new "built-ins," which means we'll have a bunch of surplus free-standing bookshelves if anyone wants them. We have a self-imposed deadline of the end of the year for finishing this project (the original date of Labor Day was laughably implausible).
