A hive swarm invasion of Hunnistea IV is imminent. The crew of the Obfuscator has a little advance warning, but not much, and a maintenance accident has left them with a ship of questionable reliability. They need to get off-world before things go completely bug-hunt. Crane thumbprints the fuel invoice [-5 credits] and begins snapping out orders...

... and the crew barely gets out ahead of the onslaught. As the Obfuscator's ramp is closing, the first reports of the swarm hive outbreak crackle over the airwaves. [need 8+ on 2d6 to escape invasion, rolled 8!]

Crane grits his teeth and sets course for Streron 41C. He's just about to relax when sensors indicate a large metallic mass ahead. Is it pirates lying in wait? Fortunately, not this time. A long-abandoned wreck has drifted into the spacelane. Flash and Otter suit up and spacewalk over to check it out. There's no sign of the crew and most of the hull's contents are long gone, but they do come back with a [hazard suit] and an [upgrade kit]. Neither is in great shape but Flash is pretty sure she can fix them in time.

Coming back from the spacewalk, Flash has time to reflect on recent events. She's calmer and more focused as she un-suits, and she heads to the workshop to start tinkering with the new acquisitions. [character event in transit: Flash +3 xp, spends 6 xp to raise Savvy from +1 to +2]

Streron 41C is quiet. With news of Hunnistea's swarm hive invasion moving at the speed of travel, the Obfuscator may be the first ship to notify the local authorities.

Streron doesn't look kindly on freelancers; a work permit here costs 3 credits. Crane rolls his eyes and reluctantly signs off on the expense despite Otter's offer to forge one. At least commerce is booming here due to recent [free trade zone] declarations, though a local [fuel shortage] means leaving the world will be pricey when it's time to go.

[financials:

 24 cr turn start
 -1 cr crew upkeep
-3 cr freelancer license for Streron 41C
-5 cr ship debt payment (reduced to 15, then increased to 16 from interest)

 15 cr balance]

The swarm hive attack has Ice Machine rethinking his recent beer-to-workout ratio. He rearranges the cargo hold, sets his laser to [training] mode, and begins running CQB drills. [+1 xp; spends 7 xp to raise Reactions from 1 to 2]

Flash is in her happy place with technical problem to address. Ignoring the thumping and crashing coming from the hold, she sets up in the workshop and begins trying to [repair] some stuff. Her first job is the weapon upgrade kit scrounged from the derelict vessel. It takes a few hours, but she figures out the problem, and when Legs comes back, she finds her shotgun in much better condition...

Beech, as is her custom, sets out to [explore]. Her wanderings take her into a seedier part of town, and she's about to head back to the port when she literally trips over something. ["Who left this lying around?"] she asks, wiping the worst of the alley muck off a [shotgun]. She knows there's probably a reason someone dumped it here, but she's also sure Flash can make good use of it - and remove any incriminating data.

Unsupervised, Otter checks out the market. He comes back giggling and blurry around the edges thanks to a [camo cloak].

With several promising leads gone on Hunnistea, Crane and Legs are trying to [find a patron] to offer them a job. They check the usual spots but come up blank. That shiny new license isn't much good today, it seems. Discouraged, they stop off for a drink before heading back to the dock - and stumble into a murder mystery! "Well," Legs says reluctantly as she recognizes that gleam in Crane's eye, "looks like we're cops again." [failed the patron search but succeeded in the quest rumor roll]
