Some legwork gets a line on the location where the murderer is hiding. He's allegedly holed up alone in a disused cargo handling facility. Six to one odds should be easy, but he is reported to have a colony rifle, so it'll pay to be cautious...
[quest battle
deployment conditions: surprise encounter - enemy can't act in first round
notable sights: loot cache
objective: search (for evidence)
enemy: hired muscle > unknown mercs > 1 opponent... really, dice?]
[unknown merc:
panic 1-2
speed 5"
combat skill +1
toughness 4
tactical AI
colony rifle (18", ROF 1, damage 0)]
The crew already has surprise, but can they seize the initiative? The mercenary has seeded the area with sensors to give him a heads-up on anyone approaching, but between Flash and Otter's technical know-how and Beech's snooper bot, it's remarkably easy to get in. Beech's piloting could use some work, though, as she bashes the bot into a low-hanging I-beam. More work for Flash... but it lets the team move up stealthily, getting well inside the merc's perimeter before he realizes they're there.
Round 1
[reaction roll not needed, as the team has surprise]
Legs spots the mercenary peering out from behind cover, surprise on his face and rifle in his hand. She moves up, firing as she goes. She doesn't connect but the volume of fire definitely disrupts his concentration. [1 hit, stun]
Otter has already found some welcoming cover. He braces his own rifle on it and takes careful aim, but to no avail. His shot goes wide.
Crane and Ice Machine are coming in from the other side of the battlefield. They dash forward behind cover. moving up to flank (if the fight lasts that long).
Beech hangs back. Something's caught her eye: an access panel on a piece of heavy equipment is ajar. She pries it open to reveal two Kiranin crystals. [loot cache found] She pockets them for later use...
Flash ducks into cover beside Otter and starts tossing the joint, looking for the evidence the crew believes is here. No joy - this time.
Round 2
[reaction roll:
quick: no one
slow: everyone]
The merc returns fire at Legs - she's barreling toward him with a shotgun and is clearly the most immediate threat. He's still stunned, though, and the round fails to connect, but it's close enough to send her sidestepping away from him.
Otter keeps up his ineffectual long-range fire. Legs stands her ground and returns fire, also missing.
Flash sprints across the open ground behind Otter, breaking line of sight from the mercenary.
Crane, Ice Machine, and Beech continue moving up on the merc's blind side.
"Found it!" Flash yells triumphantly. She comes out of an access tube covered in grime and waving a data crystal. [search objective complete]
Round 3
[reaction roll:
quick: Crane, Legs
slow: Ice Machine, Flash, Otter, Beech]
Crane comes around the corner of the shipping container with his glare sword glowing in his fist. The merc frantically backpedals, trying to parry with his rifle, but he's far too slow. Crane lashes out, inflicting a vicious injury to his forearm and sending the rifle spinning away. The merc falls down, raising his hands in surrender.
The crew [holds the field] with its objective complete!
