Well, it was sufficiently poisonous that they were unlikely to push it and keep their jobs. The reaction to the Sandy Hook shooting seems to have changed the calculus on that.
Some proposals, like Sen. Feinstein's new AWB, have undoubtedly been in the works for awhile. And I'm sure the various gun control organizations will be happy to suggest their usual remedies. Without sensing a change in the political winds, though, I don't think anything would seriously have gone forward even in a second Obama term.
Basically, we've been winning the hearts and minds thing for awhile, to the point that openly pushing gun control is politically suicidal even for a pol who'd really like to. Now there is a sense that the hearts and minds may be shifting the other way. We'll just have to see to what degree that's true. The NRA was smart not to say anything immediately, but then dumb to bring up movies and video games.
